When I was in elementary school, the line was that America was a "melting pot."
That fell out of favor at some point, I guess because some of us did not want to be heated up and blended for the benefit of those who would be happier if we were less distinct.
I think it was replaced, at least for a time, with the analogy of a "tossed salad."(It couldn't have been that, could it?! My goodness. I bet they can't say that to the elementary school kids these days!)
So what are we? Just in time for the 4th of July, I've figured it out. We are - clearly - a tub full of assorted sprinkles.
